This embarrassing disease affecting the face consists of an abnormally active flushing reflex which is stimulated by trifling thermal or emotional stimuli, or by reflex action from the stomach in response to hot, spicy food or drink. These stimuli should be avoided as far as possible and sedatives should be given by mouth. Sulphur preparations used locally are unexpectedly effective, perhaps because they kill the mites called demodex folliculorum, which congregate in the pleasantly warm follicles and which may aggravate the disease. A cream containing i per cent. to 2 per cent. of each of the following drugs—salicylic acid, precipitated sulphur and quinolor compound ointment—is very helpful. It is compounded in a base made from a parts of wool alcohols ointment B.P., and 1 part of water ; it should be smeared lightly on the skin—not rubbed in.
